# Agent discovery and installation guide

> Machine-readable catalog, Markdown documentation, source provenance and preview-first setup for AI coding agents.

This website describes the repository catalog snapshot, which may contain unreleased entries. It is not a promise that every entry exists in the currently published package. Check `uvx awesome-python-dev list --json` for the catalog available in your installed runtime. GitHub stars and review dates are recorded snapshots, not live rankings.

Catalog reviewed: 2026-10-29. [Catalog source](https://github.com/m9rco/awesome-python-dev/blob/239895d3dd1353a48c5b39eee8eb028aadd8ac8f/src/awesome_python_dev/data/catalog.json).

FOR CODING AGENTS

## Find the right toolkit, then preview it.

Awesome Python Dev curates skills, rules, MCP servers and LSP tools and configures them for Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code Copilot and OpenCode.

### Read the catalog without installing tools

Start with [llms.txt](https://m9rco.github.io/awesome-python-dev/llms.txt) , the [JSON catalog](https://m9rco.github.io/awesome-python-dev/catalog.json) , or this page's [Markdown version](https://m9rco.github.io/awesome-python-dev/agents/index.md) . Every catalog page has a Markdown alternative linked in its HTML head. These are static public files; no account, API key, MCP connection or JavaScript execution is required to read them.

Filter the JSON tools by `kind`, `category` and `installable`. Follow `markdown_url` for setup and `evidence` for upstream sources. An absent install recipe means reference only. A native LSP server is not automatically an MCP server.

### Check availability in the installed runtime

The website tracks a repository source snapshot and can contain unreleased catalog changes. The source package currently declares version 0.3.0; that version number does not certify that this website matches its published release. The JSON `discovery` object records the catalog SHA-256 and uses a commit permalink only when the data matches that commit. Local builds can report a working-tree snapshot instead.

Use the installed CLI's catalog before selecting tool IDs. These commands inspect data after uv has obtained the CLI package; they do not install toolkit resources or modify project configuration:

```sh
uvx awesome-python-dev --version
uvx awesome-python-dev list --json
uvx awesome-python-dev profiles --json
uvx awesome-python-dev agents
```

### Preview a selected profile

Pick the agents the user actually uses and run in the intended project directory. Review the file and configuration changes before applying them:

```sh
uvx awesome-python-dev init --agents codex,claude --profile starter --dry-run
```

Once the selection and destination are confirmed, omit `--dry-run` to install. Skills and rules copy reviewed upstream content; MCP recipes write configuration for servers that the coding agent starts later. This project does not install the coding agent itself.

### Choose the distribution

`uvx awesome-python-dev` runs the Python package from PyPI. `npx awesome-python-dev` uses a small independently versioned npm launcher, which retrieves a verified Python runtime from GitHub Releases. Routine runtime updates do not require a new npm shell version. See the [installation guide](https://m9rco.github.io/awesome-python-dev/getting-started/) for Python, Node.js and selected MCP prerequisites.

### Evaluate the source and trust boundaries

Review dates, licenses, archived status and star snapshots are evidence for curation, not safety guarantees. Skill and rule archives use commit pins and SHA-256; MCP recipes pin a package or repository revision. Selected upstream software and the repository's publishers remain trust dependencies.
